Newell, Mallard Creek and Harrisburg were dispatched
to a train fire on university City Boulevard in the
vicinity of Cabarrus Farms Road. Callers reported
explosions and possible propane tanks involved. Newell
11 arrived to find a train that had struck a tanker
carrying mineral oil. The entire contets of the tanker
had ignited and were burning. The fire subsequently spread to a
boxcar with paper rolls and was threatening a tank car
with liquid nitrogen. The main body of fire was
extinguished and the boxcar fire was held in check.
Several agencies assisted with the incident. Newell was
on scene for the majority of the day and again the next
day to assist with haz-mat clean up and extinguishing the
paper rolls.
