On Friday, Charlotte Fire Department received a
report of a church fire at Newell Baptist Church, just a
few hundred feet from Newell's firehouse. Members at the
station received several verbal reports of the fire and
immediately responded to the call. There was an
extremely heavy smoke condition in the street, and CFD
quickly upgraded to a working fire. Battalion 2 arrived
and established command and requested a second alarm.
Newell Engine 1 established a water supply to Engine 27.
Newell personnel assisted with a primary search and
salvage and overhaul. The fire was brought under control
in less that 30 minutes. No one was injured in the fire,
however, the church sanctuary suffered heavy fire and
smoke damage. Newell personnel were out for 3 hours on
the call. Harrisburg provided standby for Newell during
the incident. This was the second fire at Newell Baptist
Church. In 1966, the church was completely destroyed in
a massive fire.
