Mallard Creek and Newell were dispatched on July 28 to an
apartment fire on Bonita Lane in the Berkley Place
Apartments. Dispatchers were receiving multiple calls of
people trapped on the third floor. Heavy smoke was visible
from several miles away. A full first alarms assignment was
requested from Charlotte. Mallard Creek Engine 2 and Newell
Engine 1 arrived to find heavy fire from the roof of a 3
story apartment building.
Ladder 27 was positioned at the front of the building to
contain the fire on the "B" side. Companies completed
primary searches on all of the third floor apartments.
Fire had already spread into the B-C corner of the
building and was venting through the roof. All of the
fire was above the third floor sprinklers. the third
floor of the building sustained heavy fire damage while
the rest of the building suffered water damage.
